(NEW YORK) — The New York Jets have placed quarterback Mark Sanchez short-term injured reserve, which means he is eligible to return after eight weeks.
Sanchez has a labral tear in his throwing shoulder, but said during a conference call Saturday that he is opting to not have surgery at this time. He hopes return to the field at some point this season.
“I expect to play, that’s just the way I am,” said Sanchez. “I’m expecting to be the starter, I always have been.”
Sanchez will be allowed to practice in eight weeks and is eligible to play in Week 11 against the Bills. Because of the bye in Week 10, he’ll miss only a minimum of seven games. He plans to rehab at the Jets’ facility.
Rookie Geno Smith will remain the team’s starting quarterback while Sanchez is out.
