(EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J.) — The New York Jets caught a break in Geno Smith’s first game as a starter. Smith and the Jets topped the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 18-17 on Nick Folk’s game winning field goal with seconds remaining.
During the Jets final drive of the game, Buccaneers linebacker Lavonte David pushed Smith after he was out of bounds, which set up the Folk 48-yard field goal to win it.
Smith was 24 of 38 for 256 yards with a touchdown and interception.
“It’s good to get a win for the Jets,” Smith said. “It’s not about me, it’s about my teammates and it’s about this organization.”
The Jets will have a short week with a game on Thursday against AFC East rival the New England Patriots.
“I thought Geno did a really nice job for a lot of it,” Jets head coach Rex Ryan said. “He ran, he made some big plays running. He had to make some plays.”
