Headlines had it that Hamm recently began coughing up blood, forcing him to see a specialist who found a polyp on in his vocal cord — a common malady for singers and other performers.

While Hamm does indeed have a polyp that requires surgery, he joked about his condition to host Jimmy Kimmel, explaining the tabloids had him on death’s door.

“It sounds worse than it is,” the actor said, his voice slightly hoarse, “although it doesn’t sound as bad as the how National Enquirer reported it, which was that I ‘Was coughing up blood,’ and ‘Probably have cancer.'”

Hamm said not only did fans pick up on the dramatic headlines, but so did his family.

“My sister called me and was like…’We just read that you’re gonna die,'” he said.

In reality, Hamm said the surgery he’ll need to remove the polyp is a “very routine procedure.”  The actor will undergo the outpatient operation in Boston next week.

AMC recently announced it is splitting in half the final season of Mad Men, just as it did with its other hit drama, Breaking Bad.

The first seven episodes of Mad Men’s seventh season, collectively dubbed “The Beginning,” will air next spring.
