Appearing on the season premiere of The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Monday, the actress and new Dancing with the Stars contestant explained why she cut ties with the religion.

She told host Ellen DeGeneres, “My mom got involved when we were very young, so it’s all we really ever knew.  But over time my eyes opened.  I just could no longer be affiliated with the organization and my family felt the same.”

Remini said she has since “lost friends that can no longer talk to us who are still with the organization.”  When DeGeneres asked if members of the Church can no longer speak with her specifically because she left, Remini replied, “Correct.”

Remini added that she has other friends, not affiliated with the Church of Scientology, who have stood by her and her family.

Remini also touched upon her rehearsals for the fall season of Dancing with the Stars, joking that she hurts “everywhere.”  She also noted that she’s learned the competition is harder than she thought it would be.  She’ll make her Dancing with the Stars debut next Monday on ABC.
