Manny Machado avoided injuries to both his ACL and MCL and could be running in six to eight weeks without surgery.

The injury occured in Monday’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays.  Machaco legged out a single and stepped awkwardly on the inside of first base.  He had to be taken off the field on a stretcher.

Tuesday’s MRI revealed Machado has a torn medial patellofemoral ligament.  He plans to wait until the swelling subsides before going through a light rehabilitation program.

“The MCL is fine, the ACL is fine,” Orioles head trainer Richie Bancells said. “All those major ligaments are fine. This is a smaller ligament.

Had the injury been more serious, Machado would be sidelined into the 2014 season.

The 21-year-old Machaco batted .283 in his first full major league season with 14 home runs and 71 RBIs.
