In 2010, Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley famously ran for the U.S. Senate seat that was vacated by the death of Edward Kennedy, seemingly thinking victory was hers for the taking.

Instead, Coakley was upset by Republican Scott Brown in a special election, marking the first time a Massachusetts Democrat lost a Senate race in 50 years.

Pundits said that Coakley was over-confident and didn’t understand the true anger of the electorate.

This time, Coakley promises to run a smarter campaign as she seeks to replace outgoing Democratic Gov. Deval Patrick.  She claims she’s learned from her mistakes of 2010.  Coakley will launch her campaign with a three-day bus tour of 18 cities.

At least five other Democrats want the job, not to mention Republican Charlie Baker, who lost to Patrick three years ago in the general election.
