Wacha lost his bid for a no-hitter when Ryan Zimmerman beat out an infield single with two outs in the ninth inning as the St. Louis Cardinals blanked the Washington Nationals 2-0 on Tuesday night.

In what was only his ninth career start, Wacha (4-1) struck out nine while only giving up the hit that caused the Busch Stadium crowd to scream and shout in disbelief.  Wacha became the third pitcher to have a no-hitter attempt broken up with one out to go this season.

“I guess it just wasn’t to be,” Wacha said. “But it was still a pretty special night.

Yadier Molina hit an RBI double in the 4th inning to give the Cardinals a two-run lead.  They move closer to the NL Central title with each victory.

“It was fun to catch him,” Molina said. “The no-hitter would have been a plus. I was hoping to get it, but it didn’t happen.”
