Both teams got excellent performances from their starting pitching. Tigers’ ace Justin Verlander rebounded from his recent struggles for at least one day. He pitched 7.0 innings while surrendering no runs with two strikeouts.

Meanwhile, Danny Salazar was effective in 6.0 innings of work as he didn’t allow an earned run, and struck out five Tigers in the process.

The Indians managed just five hits in the game, but it only took one to change the course of the game.

Tigers’ closer Joaquin Benoit entered the game in the ninth inning and proceeded to walk three Indians before third baseman Mike Aviles stepped up to the plate. With one swing of the bat, Aviles hit a grand slam and sealed a 4-0 win after closer Chris Perez finished the job in the ninth inning.

With the win, the Indians now trail the Tampa Bay Rays by four games in the Wild Card standings.
