Nationals Rally Past Braves, 6-5

Washington came into the bottom of the ninth inning down 5-2, but answered with three runs capped off by Denard Span’s grounder that went through Braves shortstop Andrelton Simmons legs that scored two runs to give them a 6-5 win.

The Braves could have clinched the National League Eastern Division title with a sweep of the day-night double header, but will have to wait until their next series.

Washington closed within 4.5 games of Cincinnati for the NL’s second wild-card berth with 12 games remaining.

Span’s single in the second inning also extended his 27-game hit streak.

Nationals’ players dawned blue and gold Navy caps during their warm-ups to honor the victims of Monday’s shooting.
