File photo. (Official White House Photo by Pete Souza)(WASHINGTON) — Hours after the U.S. House of Representatives passed a funding bill that President Obama has threatened to veto, the president phoned Speaker John Boehner with a focus on the next fight — over the debt ceiling.

Just ten days remain before a government shutdown deadline, but there’s no agreement on a short-term spending measure.  And if no deal is reached on the debt ceiling by the middle of October, the U.S. government won’t be able to pay all its bills.

“The president called the speaker this evening to tell him he wouldn’t negotiate with him on the debt limit,” a Boehner aide said, adding, “It was a brief call.”

The White House said the full faith and credit of the country shouldn’t be subject to haggling.
