The Pirates defeated the Chicago Cubs 2-1 Monday and then waited as the St. Louis Cardinals beat Washington, which clinched the Pirates a postseason berth for the first time since 1992.

“This is everything I dreamed about when I was watching the Pirates in the early 90’s,” Pirates second baseman Neil Walker, who homered Monday, said to Root Sports. “It’s been a long time and a lot of people said we couldn’t do it. We didn’t listen to that. We kept grinding it out and here we are today giving ourselves an opportunity in the postseason. It’s a great day for Pittsburgh and a great day for the Pirates.”

The Pirates and Cubs were tied 1-1 in the ninth innning when outfielder Starling Marte hit a home run to give the Pirates the lead for good.

The Pirates still have a chance to win the NL Central. Pittsburgh is two games behind St. Louis with five left to play.
