Kersey/Getty Images(PITTSBURGH) — The Pittsburgh Pirates announced on Saturday that they have shut down starting pitcher Wandy Rodriguez for the remainder of the season because of continuing pain and discomfort in his left forearm.

The left-hander has been on the disabled list since June 6 due to stiffness in his pitching arm. He met with orthopedist Dr. James Andrews last month, who found Rodriguez to be dealing with arthritis in his elbow.

The 34-year-old Rodriguez made 12 starts this season for Pittsburgh, going 6-4 with a 3.59 ERA. He struck out 46 batters while walking 12, in 62 2-3 innings of work.
