David Ortiz hit two home runs and his double in the sixth inning gave him 2,000 hits for his career.

“Congratulations to David. That’s a heck of a milestone,” Tigers skipper Jim Leyland said. “I’m sure the Red Sox fans are proud of him and he’s proud of himself. He’s had a wonderful career and he’s popular here. A very kind man, really. I’m very happy for him. It came against the wrong team, but that’s OK.”

That’s probably because even with the loss, the Tigers (81-59) hold a 6 1/2 game lead over the Cleveland Indians in the AL Central.

Ortiz may have been the star of the game, but it takes contributions from many players to score 20 runs.

Jacoby Ellsbury, Stephen Drew, Ryan Lavarnway, Mike Napoli, Daniel Nava and Will Middlebrooks hit the other six home runs, as the Red Sox set a franchise record with seven different hitters hitting a home run.

The win keeps the Red Sox (84-57) 5 1/2 games ahead of the Tampa Bay Rays for first in the AL East.
