(NEW YORK) — Serena Williams defeated Victoria Azarenka on Sunday for her fifth U.S. Open title.
Williams was tested by Azarenka in three sets 7-6, 6-7 (6-8), 6-1 to claim her 17th Grand Slam singles championship.
Williams had a chance to close out the game in the second set, serving at 5-4 and 6-5, but failed to close the door on Azarenka, who battled back.
Williams is now 67-4 in 2013 and has won nine tournaments.
Williams trails just Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova on the all-time list for most Grand Slams.
