The Browns traded Richardson, their first-round pick from the 2012 NFL Draft (No. 3 overall), to the Indianapolis Colts Wednesday for a 2014 first-round pick.

After their 2012 season ended, the Browns promoted general manager Michael Lombardi to general manager, hired Rob Chudzinksi as the new head coach and brought in Norv Turner as the team’s offensive coordinator.

Richardson rushed for 950 yards and 11 touchdowns last season, and had 105 yards on 31 carries this season, but apparently he isn’t part of the team’s big picture outlook.

“Trent’s a great player and we expect him to have success in this league,” Browns CEO Joe Banner said in a press release. “Right now, based on how we’re building this team for sustainable success, we’re going to be aggressive and do what it takes to assemble a team that consistently wins.”

The acquisition of Richardson gives the Colts someone to help ease the pain after losing running Vick Ballard for the season with a torn ACL.

Richardson joins a Colts’ backfield that includes Ahmad Bradshaw and Donald Brown.
