Will Senators Filibuster Spending Bill to Block Obamacare?
Published at(WASHINGTON) — As the Senate takes up the measure Monday to prevent a government shutdown, opponents of President Obama’s health care law are scrambling to find a workable strategy.
Blocked by Senate procedural rules from a filibuster on the measure to stop Obamacare, Sen. Ted Cruz is now discussing a filibuster against the whole bill passed by the House last week.
The bill, which keeps the government running for three more months but strips funding for Obamacare, was approved by a vote of 230 to 189 Friday morning.
In an op-ed in Real Clear Politics Monday, the Texas Republican says: “We know the Democratic leadership wants to fund Obamacare, and it’s certain [Senate Majority] Leader [Harry] Reid will use every gimmick, obscure parliamentary trick, and sweetheart deal to do it. After all, that’s how he passed Obamacare in the first place.”
Cruz says a vote to limit debate “is a vote for Obamacare.”
As the Senate takes up the funding bill, he says the next step is “critical.”
