(SANTA CLARA, Calif.) — The San Francisco 49ers have activated linebacker Aldon Smith to the 53-man roster from the non-football injury list on Thursday.
The move comes just two days after the troubled 24-year-old turned himself in to Santa Clara County authorities as he faces weapons charges.
The 49ers (6-2) are on a bye week, but will host the Carolina Panthers next Sunday.
The team is expected to work Smith back into the playbook slowly, according to ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter.
Smith has missed the last five games undergoing rehab at an in-patient facility for substance abuse since late September.
If convicted of the charges, Smith could face up to four years and four months in jail.
