Phillips was a Texas original in his blue jeans, boots and trademark white Stetson and also coached the New Orleans Saints.

“Bum is gone to Heaven-loved and will be missed by all -great Dad,Coach, and Christian,” his son and current Texans defensive coordinator Wade Phillips tweeted on Friday.

Phillips came to Houston in 1975 and led them to two AFC Championship games before he was fired in 1980.

“I feel the same way about Houston as Houston feels about me, it’s just something with this town,” Phillips said in an interview in 2010 with KTRK in Houston.

“People always talked about teams becoming families,” Legendary Oilers quarterback Dan Pastorini said. “Bum actually turned us into a family.”

Phillips was 27-42 with the Saints before retiring in 1985.
