(NEW YORK) — Here’s a look at the new movies opening nationwide Friday:
— Carrie: Chloe Grace Moretz plays the titular character in the horror flick, which is based on the Stephen King novel and is a remake of sorts of the 1976 classic. Carrie has telekinetic powers that she uses to frighten her town after she’s “pushed too far” at her senior prom. Julianne Moore plays her mother. Rated R.
— Escape Plan: Sylvester Stallone is a structural security expert who’s locked up in a prison he designed for a crime he didn’t commit. He attempts to break out, with the help of another inmate, played by Arnold Schwarzenegger. Jim Caviezel, 50 Cent and Amy Ryan also star. Rated R.
— The Fifth Estate: Star Trek Into Darkness actor Benedict Cumberbatch plays WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange in the dramatized version of how the website gained notoriety by leaking government secrets. Rush actor Daniel Bruhl, Anthony Mackie, Stanley Tucci and Laura Linney also star. Rated R.
And opening in limited release:
— 12 Years A Slave: The drama, which is already garnering Oscar buzz, stars Chiwetel Ejiofor as a black man in the pre-Civil War days who’s enslaved for 12 years before meeting a Canadian abolitionist — played by Brad Pitt — who changes his life. Michael Fassbender, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Dano, Alfre Woodard and Paul Giamatti also star. Rated R.
