Hunnam left less than three weeks before the scheduled start of production. Sources say he was uncomfortable with the media frenzy and fan complaints about him being cast in the lead.

The official announcement regarding his departure was that his Sons schedule presented a conflict.

According to another source, Hunnam’s salary for the film was to be $125,000, and he was having creative differences with director Sam Taylor-Johnson, and he wasn’t happy with the script.

Now, Universal Pictures and Focus Features are searching for another actor to star as Christian Grey opposite Dakota Johnson as Anastasia Steele, so the film can start production on Nov. 1.  Some of the candidates being looked at include British television stars Jamie Dornan and Christian Cooke.  True Blood’s Alexander Skarsgard also is in the running.

Even without a leading man in place right now, the studio behind the film remains confident it will make its Aug. 1, 2014 release date.
