The New Jersey Supreme Court previously denied Christie’s request to stay a lower court order permitting homosexuals to marry after it was determined that same-sex couples were being denied equal rights in New Jersey after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the Defense of Marriage Act last June.

After gay and lesbian nuptials got underway right after the stroke of midnight, Christie decided to drop his challenge despite his objection to the courts making same-sex marriage legal.

Christie’s office said in a statement, “The governor will do his constitutional duty and ensure his administration enforces the law as dictated by the New Jersey Supreme Court.”

New Jersey became the 14th state along with the District of Columbia to issue marriage licenses to gays and lesbians.
