Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck threw for three touchdowns, leading the Colts past the Denver Broncos 39-33 Sunday, spoiling Manning’s return to Indianapolis.

The loss was also the Broncos (6-1) first of the season.

Manning and the Broncos got the scoring started first when Manning connected with Eric Decker for 17-yard touchdown to give the Broncos a 7-0 lead. The Colts proceeded to score 10 points before Manning threw his second touchdown of the night, this one to Julius Thomas, to give the Broncos a 14-10 second quarter lead. But on the Broncos’ next drive, Manning was stripped sacked in his own endzone by Colts linebacker Robert Mathis for a safety, and the Colts went on to score 23 unanswered points.

“That was a big play,” Manning said of Mathis’ play. “Certainly anytime you give them a safety or the ball again it’s potentially a nine point swing.”

The Broncos did rally.

Down 36-17 in the fourth quarter, Manning led the team on two-straight scoring drives to cut Colts’ lead to 36-30. Things didn’t go so well on Denver’s next drive when Colts linebacker Pat Angerer intercepted Manning, setting up a 42-yard Adam Vinatieri field goal.

Before the game the Colts honored Manning with a 90-second highlight reel of his time in Indianapolis.

The Colts (5-2) are now two games ahead of Tennessee for first place in the AFC South.
