Crayon Drawings Banned at Utah State Prison

iStock/Thinkstock(DRAPER, Utah) — Starting this week, you will no longer be able to send crayon drawings to inmates at Utah State Prison.
Officials say incoming mail will be checked to make sure no crayon drawings are being sent to prisoners after discovering it’s the latest drug delivery system.
Authorities say some inmates’ families and friends have mixed a drug-laced paste with crayon wax and prisoners get a quick drug fix by licking the coloring.
A Utah state prison official says it’s sad kids won’t be allowed to send their incarcerated fathers crayon drawings anymore.
Lt. Ericson Smith, who oversees the mail facility at the prison, tells KSL.com, “So now it affects the kids not being able to color their little picture for daddy.”
He added, “It’s sad. We have inmates’ family and friends sending them narcotics and substances and we’re trying to change their behavior down inside the prison so when they do get out, they’ll be able to be good citizens in society.”
