Although opera lover Fiorello H. La Guardia helped get it off the ground 70 years ago, the New York City Opera has struggled recently, needing $7 million by the end of September to stay alive.

After only being able to raise a portion of that amount, the company announced on Tuesday it was shutting down and filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

While New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is a big patron of the art, he said that neither the city nor his private foundation would bail out the New York City Opera, explaining, “The business model doesn’t seem to be working.”

Some of the big opera stars that came from the company included Beverly Sills, Placido Domingo, Renee Fleming and Samuel Ramey.

Meanwhile, New York still has the Metropolitan Opera for all the buffs.
