The news was first reported by FoxSports.com.

Williams has never been a manager at any level, but served as a coach for the Arizona Diamondbacks for the past four seasons in various roles.

The 47-year-old Williams was a five-time All-Star third baseman during his 17-year career with the San Francisco Giants, Cleveland Indians, and Arizona Diamondbacks.

Williams will be taking over for the recently retired Johnson after two-and-a-half seasons with the team.

Johnson went 224-183 with the Nationals and helped lead them into a new era of Nationals baseball. With young stars like Bryce Harper and Stephen Strasburg, the Nationals are still one of the more exciting up-and-coming teams in Major League Baseball. In 2012, the Nationals led Major League Baseball with 98 wins, but won just 86 games in 2013 and missed the playoffs.
