Va., Police Officer Tom Piccard has been identified as the gunman who opened fire Wednesday at the city’s federal courthouse before he was shot dead by a cop and a court security officer.

It wasn’t known what motivated Piccard, 55, to fire more than 20 rounds into the building with an assault rifle.  No one was badly hurt although two security guards were treated for cuts from shattered glass.

One witness said she saw the former police officer, who was retired for 13 years, fire at the courthouse from a bank parking lot.

“I just couldn’t believe it.  He wasn’t shooting at people on the ground.  He was only firing at the building,” Carla Daniels said.

Investigators will try to determine if Piccard had some beef with the government.
