Gomes Lifts Sox Past Cardinals to Even World Series

Brian D. Kersey/Getty Images(ST. LOUIS) — Jonny Gomes wasn’t even supposed to be in the lineup. The Boston Red Sox must be happy he was.
Gomes, who was told he was replacing Shane Victorino (back injury) in the lineup a couple hours before gametime, hit a three-run home run to propel the Red Sox to a 4-2 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals in Game 4 of the World Series Sunday night.
The best-of-seven series is now tied at two games apiece.
“I don’t know if I’m suppossed to be here or not,” Gomes said when talking about his home run. “I don’t know if I’m supposed to be, you know, Game 4 protecting Pun (David Ortiz). But I’ll I’ve wanted since I signed up for this game was the opportunity. Whether it was to have the uniform, pinch-hit or start. You can run my stats, you can do all those kind of things but that’s why we play the game because you never know what’s going to happen.”
Red Sox starting pitcher Clay Buchholz pitched four innings, allowing one unearned run. Felix Dubrount, who pitched in relief of Buchholz, earned the win, pitching 2 2/3 innings and allowing one hit, one run, and zero walks while striking out three.
For the second straight night the game ended in peculiar fashion. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Cardinals pinch-runner Kolten Wong was picked off by Boston closer Koji Uehara to end the game.
The previous night the Cardinals won the game when Red Sox third baseman Will Middlebrooks was called for obstruction, allowing Allen Craig to score the winning run.
Game 5 is Monday night in St. Louis. Jon Lester takes the mound for the Red Sox and will be opposed by Adam Wainwright.
