“[The] best perks about playing Olivia Pope, I guess the people I get to work with,” she told Essence magazine, where she graces their November cover.  “You know, having that kind of material, having that writing in my hand every week, and being able to come to work and work with those actors who are so talented.  I just feel like our cast inspires me every day.”

Washington also added that Scandal is so successful because viewers are truly interested in her role as a Washington, D.C.-based political fixer.

“They are allowing an educated, intelligent, powerful, complicated, human, flawed, multidimensional black woman into their homes,” she continued.  “They’re not walking past her on the street, they’re not trying to avoid engaging her, they’re not ignoring her and pretending she’s somebody else’s family and somebody else’s problem.”

The November issue of Essence magazine hits newsstands Oct. 10.
