For instance, the survey found that 69 percent of employees say their managers set a good example by being ethical, honest, collaborative, creative, empowering, innovative, dedicated and trustworthy.

Nine out of ten who expressed that view contend their managers demonstrated those values regularly.

As for what attribute constitutes a good boss, the overwhelming choice was honesty followed by being goal-oriented with compassion right behind.

The survey also suggests that more people want a boss with serious goals, such as investing in their employees’ personal growth as opposed to one who prefers to make the workplace a fun place to be.

In terms of getting a pat on the back, 43 percent of employees want to be recognized in private for their good work while 25 percent said they like to be lauded in front of their associates. Meanwhile, 32 percent want praise from their boss’ boss.
