NBA Changes Finals Format

NBA? SQUARESPACE CACHEVERSION=1382600470577National Basketball Association(NEW YORK) — For the first time since 1985 the NBA Finals will have a 2-2-1-1-1 format instead of the 2-3-2 system.

Team owners voted unanimously Wednesday to change the rule, which will be enforced at the 2014 Finals.

“There’s been a sense among our teams that in a 2-2 series, it’s not fair for a team with the better record to be away for Game 5,” NBA commissioner David Stern said. “It’s not fair for the better team in terms of record to spend as many as eight days away from home.”

David Stern, who is set to step down as commissioner Feb 1, was the commissioner when the league changed the format from 2-2-1-1-1 to 2-3-2 in 1985.

The league will add an extra day off between Games 6 and 7 to make the traveling transition easier.
