NC County Official to Accept Marriage Licenses
Published at | Updated at(BUNCOMBE COUNTY, N.C.) — The register of deeds in Buncombe County, N.C., says he will accept marriage license applications from same-sex couples.
The county register of deeds says he will hold the licenses and get legal advice from the state’s attorney general. He says that to this point, he has been forced to deny applications from “upstanding citizens” and he does not believe that that is fair.
“I will let each couple know that it is my hope to grant them a license,” the official told WBTV, a CBS affiliate in Charlotte, “but I need to seek the North Carolina Attorney General’s approval.”
