Police Release Image of Man Wanted for Questioning in Madeleine McCann Case
(LONDON) -- U.K. police have released images of a man they want to question in connection with the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, who went missing from her parents' hotel room in Portugal in 2007, when she was just 3 years old.
According to London's Metropolitan Police, investigators have been able to "place more significance" on events the night the girl vanished and want the public's help in identifying the man, who was seen in the Praia da Luz town area around the time of Madeleine's disappearance.
The new leads in the case will be examined during an episode of the U.K. television show Crimewatch on Monday night.
"The [images] are clear, and I'd ask the public to look very carefully at them," Det. Chief Inspector Andy Redwood said during an interview for the television show. "And if they know who this person is, please come forward."
Redwood said Scotland Yard's continued investigation has "significantly changed the timeline" of the events of that night.
In an interview for the BBC television show Crimewatch, Redwood said investigators had poured over old information in the hopes of finding a new lead.
Police said they now have 41 people of interest in the case, 15 of whom are British.
"Primarily what we sought to do from the beginning is try to overthink back to zero if you like," Redwood said. "Try to take everything back to the beginning and reanalyze and reassess everything...accepting nothing."
The Crimewatch show will dramatically recreate moments of the day that Madeleine went missing and ask the British public for help in solving the case.
Madeleine's parents, Gerry and Kate McCann, have spent the last six years searching for their daughter and drawing attention to their case. Initially the couple was questioned in connection to their daughter's disappearance.
"We're not the ones who have done something wrong here," Katie McCann said during an interview for the show. "It's the person who's gone into that apartment and taken a little girl, away from her family."
