The trouble started for the Cardinals with one out in the first inning. With men on first and second, Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz hit what looked like a guaranteed double play ball. Instead Cardinals shortstop Pete Kozma missed the ball that was throw to him at second base. The play was originally called an out, but after Red Sox skipper John Farrell argued, the entire six-man umpire crew got together and ruled the runner safe at second. Mike Napoli proceeded to hit a bases-clearing double to give the Sox a 3-0 lead.

“I think based on their group conversation, surprisingly, to a certain extent, they overturned it and I think got the call right,” Farrell said.

Jon Lester handled it from there, pitching 7 2/3 innings allowing five hits, no runs, one walk while striking out eight in the win.

Cardinals outfielder Carlos Beltran was sent to the hospital after injuring his ribs when he ran into a wall to rob Ortiz of a home run in the second inning.

Cardinals skipper Mike Matheny said after the game that Beltran had x-rays on the injury and that everything cameback negative. Matheny called Beltran day-to-day.

Game 2 is Thursday night. Michael Wacha takes the mound for the Cardinals and will be opposed by John Lackey.
