With 64 percent of the area’s major roadways in poor condition, Southern California has the country’s most beat up roads, the National Transportation Research Group, a Washington, D.C.-based non-profit, finds, and drivers there are paying for it.

The report finds drivers in Los Angeles spend, on average, $832 a year on extra car maintenance, fuel consumption and tire wear because of all the potholes.

Judy Gish at the California Department of Transportation says it makes sense.

“We have the most cars. We have the most traffic,” she says.
