The best-of-seven series is now tied, 1-1.

The Red Sox took a 2-1 lead into the seventh inning after David Ortiz hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth. Sox starting pitcher John Lackey struck out Allen Craig before walking David Freese and allowing a single to Jon Jay. That was enough to make Boston skipper John Farrell call Craig Breslow out from the bullpen.

The Cardinals then put Pete Kozma in as a pinch-runner for Freese. Kozma and Jay were successful on a double steal, putting men on second and third with one out. Breslow proceeded to walk Daniel Descalso to load the bases before Matt Carpenter hit a sacrifice fly to left field. Red Sox left fielder Jonny Gomes attempted a throw to home plate to get the runner, but the ball went wide of catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia.

Breslow, who was backing up Saltalamacchia, received the ball and attempted to throw out Jay at third base. But Breslow’s throw went into the stands, allowing Jay to score and Descalso to move up to third base.

“It just kind of sailed on me,” Breslow said. “I’ve made a throw of that distance before.”

Carlos Beltran would drive in Descalso in the next at bat to make the game 4-2.

Cardinals rookie pitcher Michael Wacha was once again solid, pitching six innings and allowing three hits, two runs, abd four walks while striking out six.

Game 3 is Saturday in St. Louis. Jake Peavy takes the bump for the Red Sox and will be opposed by Joe Kelly.
