Stocks End Lower on Disappointing Earnings Reports

GETTY 102313 Wallstreet?  SQUARESPACE CACHEVERSION=1382564810531iStock/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) — Stocks struggled, thanks to some disappointing earnings reports out on Wednesday.
 
The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 54 points to 15,413.33. The Nasdaq Composite gave up 22 points to close at 3,907.07. The S&P 500 closed down eight points, finishing the session at 1,746.38.
 
Equipment manufacturer Caterpillar led the Dow lower after reporting a big drop in its third-quarter numbers, while AT&T eked out only a small gain.
 
If you’re hoping to get a holiday job, you may be out of luck.  The National Retail Federation says the pace of growth in seasonal hiring has slowed, like the rest of the job market.
 
The Securities Exchange Commission has given a preliminary green light to new rules that would allow startup companies to sell stock online to small-time investors. Congress will ultimately have the final say.
