“Our anticipation is he will play well,” head coach Leslie Frazier said.

Freeman signed with the Vikings last week after he was released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The team had originally planned to let Freeman sit another week in order to become more comfortable with the offense, but the team sped up the timetable after watching him excel in practice all week.

Freeman is familiar with the Vikings’ offense thanks to his days at Kansas State University. He played for Ron Price while in college, who who worked with Vikings offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave when the two were at Virginia together.

“I took out my old books, and started going through, looking at some of the different principle concepts in the offense, the run game,” Freeman said. “There’s a lot of carryover to different concepts. We’ve just been grinding. Some stuff sticks faster than others, but it’s been good.”

In three starts for the Buccaneers this year, Freeman threw for 571 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions while completing just 45.7 percent of his passes.

Christian Ponder will be Freeman’s primary backup.
