Wendy Davis Announces Run for Texas Governor
(AUSTIN, Texas) -- The worst-kept secret in Texas is no longer a secret at all. Democratic State Senator Wendy Davis has announced her intention to run for governor.
It was an 11-hour filibuster against strict, new abortion regulations that thrust her into a national spotlight -- and earned her a legion of supporters and critics on either side of the abortion debate. But in announcing she'll run for governor, Davis didn't even mention abortion, focusing, instead, on education.
"Texas deserves a leader who understands that making education a priority creates good jobs for Texas," she said.
Davis has already raised a million dollars in campaign contributions. Her presumptive Republican opponent, state Attorney General Greg Abbott -- a well-connected figure who has been a paraplegic since a storm-related accident in 1984 -- reportedly has $20 million campaign chest.
