Matheny was set to enter the final year of his contract, but now he’s signed through the 2017 season.

Matheny has guided the Cardinals to a 185-139 record since he was hired. In 2012, the Cardinals reached the NLCS, and this past season he managed the team to the World Series, where they lost to the Red Sox in six games.

“I love what I do,” Matheny said. “But to do it here in a place I call home is extremely special….I’m very grateful.”

Matheny was no stranger to St. Louis before becoming the team’s manager. He played for the team from 2000-2004, and helped lead the team to the World Series in 2004.

Overall, Matheny spent 13 seasons in Major League Baseball as a catcher with the Cardinals, Brewers, Blue Jays, and Giants.
