The singer, 24, appeared in court in Los Angeles Wednesday for a probation hearing stemming from his 2009 assault on Rihanna, his first court appearance in about a month.

During his six-minute appearance, Brown held hands with girlfriend Karrueche Tran.

Brown faced the possibility of being sent to jail after allegedly getting into a fight in Washington D.C. in October. Instead, Brown was ordered to spend three months in a residential treatment facility, where he will have to do 24 hours of community labor a week.

Brown will also be drug tested and will have to take medication as ordered by a doctor. He also is forbidden from leaving Los Angeles, unless it’s to attend a court hearing in Washington, D.C.

The judge Wednesday also requested a report of the alleged D.C. fight to determine whether a probation violation occurred. Brown’s next hearing will be Dec. 16.
