E. Coli Identified as Likely Cause of Sandwich Filling Recall

Food Safety and Inspection Service(NEW YORK) — Health officials announced on Sunday that E. coli could be the cause of a recall of thousands of pounds of sandwich filling.
A Richmond, Calif., food supplier is recalling more than 181,000 pounds of ready-to-eat salads and sandwich fillings with fully-cooked chicken and ham that may be contaminated with E. coli, according to federal health officials.
Twenty six people in three states have been sickened as a result, health officials report.
The sandwich fillings were produced between Sept. 23 and Nov. 6, and shipped to retailers, including Trader Joe’s in Arizona, California, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Texas, Utah and Washington, according to a press release on the Department of Agriculture’s website.
Glass Onion Catering announced that the products are being recalled in conjunction with other foods regulated by the Food and Drug Administration, according to the Food Safety and Inspection Service website.
The USDA says while it is uncommon to find E. coli, a potentially deadly bacteria, in a poultry product, FSIS will continue its investigation in conjunction with the FDA to identify the source of the contamination.
