Ex-Wife Says Nelson Mandela Can’t Speak

JUDA NGWENYA/AFP/Getty Images(JOHANNESBURG, South Africa) — The ex-wife of Nelson Mandela says that the former South African president is unable to speak.
Mandela spent almost three months in a South African hospital with a recurring lung infection earlier this year. He has since returned to his home, where he receives constant care from a number of doctors.
Winnie Mandela told South Africa’s Sunday Independent newspaper that the former president can no longer speak “because of all the tubes that are in his mouth.” Mandela has had a number of tubes inserted to remove fluid from him lungs.
Winnie Mandela maintained, however, that her ex-husband is not on life support.
A statement from South African President Jacob Zuma on Monday said that Mandela’s condition remains stable but critical.
