iStock/Thinkstock(ANCHORAGE, Alaska) — Four people were killed from a plane crash in western Alaska Friday night.

Alaska State Police said the single-engine turboprop had ten people on board.

The plane, which had been reported missing, went down near the remote village of St. Mary’s.

Melanie Coffer, a young mother aboard the plane, walked almost a mile in cold, foggy weather to meet rescuers. Coffer’s 5-month old baby did not survive the crash despite CPR attempts by Coffer. St. Mary’s Village Police Officer Fred Lamont Jr., called Coffer a hero.

Both state troopers and the Coast Guard responded to the scene. The National Transportation Safety Board is sending officials to investigate the cause of the crash.
