Gwinnett County Sgt. Brian Doan told ABC News that police dispatch received a 911 call from the girl’s father at 3:43 a.m. The man indicated he was suicidal, and that his daughter had died after drinking a type of chemical, police said. He told police that the girl’s body was with him inside the apartment.

Officers who responded to the call found the man standing outside the Landmark at Coventry Pointe Apartments on Veranda Chase. Doan said that when they arrived he pointed to a trash can in the recreational area where there were picnic tables.

Officers lifted the lid and found the girl’s body inside, which they said had been burned, although the cause of the girl’s death has not yet been confirmed.

Police have not released the names of the father or his daughter, and are treating the death as a homicide.

The father has been taken to Police Headquarters but has not yet been arrested, Doan said.
