(KANSAS CITY, MO.) — The Kansas City Royals agreed to a four-year contract with free agent starting pitcher Jason Vargas on Thursday. The deal is worth $32 million, according to ESPN.
The 30-year-old Vargas spent the 2013 season with the Los Angeles Angels, where he went 9-8 with a 4.02 ERA in 24 starts. He struck out 109 batters in 150 innings of work.
Before joining the Angels, Vargas was with the Mariners from 2009 through 2012. In his four seasons in Seattle, he compiled a record of 36-42 with a 4.09 ERA in 119 games.
The Royals expect Vargas to fill the void in the starting rotation created with Ervin Santana leaving for free agency.
