It’s the third time Kenyans have captured both titles. Kenyans also won both titles in 2002 and 2003.

Kenya’s Geoffrey Mutai won the men’s race Sunday with a time of two hours, eight minutes and twenty-four seconds. He also won the race in 2011.

Kenya’s Priscah Jeptoo won the women’s race with a time of 2:25:07.

Ryan Vail of Portland, Oregon, was the top American male finisher. He finished 13th. Thirty-three-year-old Adriana Nelson of Fort Collins, Colorado, was the first American woman to cross the finish line. She also finished 13th.

More than 50,000 runners began the race, which weaved through the city’s five boroughs. Last year’s New York City Marathon was canceled because of Superstorm Sandy.

All the runners this year received blue ribbons as a tribute to April’s Boston Marathon, in which three people were killed and more than 260 others were injured in two bombings.
