M23 Rebel Group Surrenders in the Congo, Tells Supporters to Disarm

Zoonar/Thinkstock(JOHANNESBURG) — After 19 months of fighting in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the M23 rebel group has surrendered, telling its supporters to disarm.
The rebels say they will now operate using “purely political means.”
If the peace holds it will be a tremendous win for a new strategy by the United Nations. Starting on Monday, U.N. peacekeepers engaged in actual combat, helping the Congalese army drive out the rebel fighters.
The conflict in the Congo had displaced 800,000.
