Majority of Job Seekers Overly Optimistic Before Interviews

GETTY 11613 ApplyJob? SQUARESPACE CACHEVERSION=1383735831402iStock/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) — Think you know what a hiring manager is looking for when you seek a new job?  Better think again.

The third annual Job Preparedness Indicator suggests a lot of people might be deluding themselves when it comes to what they bring to the table in their job search.

The JPI says that just over seven in 10 people believe they know how to adequately present their skills and experience during an interview and 56 percent are confident that they know what interviewers are looking for in applicants.

However, hiring managers have a vastly different opinion and it’s not a good one.  Just 15 percent say that candidates have precisely what new employers are looking for in any given job.

As a result, three quarters of hiring mangers says candidates should have a professional source such as a mentor to ascertain whether they’ve got the right skills for the job they’re applying for.

But are job seekers listening to that advice? Not really. The JPI says two-thirds in 2013 prefer to go it alone when preparing for an interview than get tips from career counselors or instructors.
