Ernesto Lluberes, 41, was found inside his vehicle in a northwest Miami-Dade neighborhood at 2:55 a.m., according to investigators with the Miami-Dade Police Department.

His mother, Violetta Lluberes, spoke with ABC affiliate WPLG-TV and said her son left his house at 11 p.m. on Saturday for his 2:30 a.m. shift at the airport. He told her he was going in early to earn some extra overtime pay.

Police are asking the public for any information about the case.

Lluberes was recognized in 2006 by Miami International Airport with a Good Samaritan award after he, along with two other officers, assisted an airport employee suffering a heart attack.

He was previously arrested for battery, but was acquitted, police said.

His mother said he was a beloved father and said he didn’t drink or do drugs, according to WPLG-TV.

TSA officials said in a statement to ABC News that they are cooperating with Miami-Dade Police.

Lluberes lived in Naranja, Fla., and his funeral is scheduled for Thursday, according to an online obituary.

Miami-Dade police are asking anyone with information to contact the agency’s Homicide Bureau at (305) 471-2400 or to contact Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at (305) 471-8477.
