iStock/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) — The North Atlantic hurricane season officially ends Saturday, with the fewest number of hurricanes since 1982.

Only two hurricanes formed in 2013, and according to Weather Underground’s Dr. Jeff Masters, neither hurricane was major.

This year marks the first time no major hurricanes have formed since 1994, Weather Underground reports.

This year of record calm follows 2012’s Hurricane Sandy, which made landfall in New Jersey last October. Sandy caused fatalities, injuries, severe destruction to the East Coast shoreline, and billions of dollars of damage.
